{"id":16576,"date":"2025-12-11T19:02:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T19:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/henry-cuellar-will-retake-key-spending-post-after-trump-pardon\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T19:02:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T19:02:11","slug":"henry-cuellar-will-retake-key-spending-post-after-trump-pardon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/henry-cuellar-will-retake-key-spending-post-after-trump-pardon\/","title":{"rendered":"Henry Cuellar will retake key spending post after Trump pardon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee voted Thursday to return Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51338\" data-person-id=\"51338\">Henry Cuellar<\/a> to his leadership position on a powerful spending panel following his pardon on federal corruption charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe got ratified,\u201d Cuellar told reporters following the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran Texas lawmaker overcame <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/10\/henry-cuellar-appropriations-vote-00685842\" target=\"_blank\">private concerns inside his party<\/a> about restoring him as the top Democrat on the Homeland Security subpanel after President Donald Trump granted him clemency in a surprise move last week.<\/p>\n<p>But Cuellar remains popular in the Democratic Caucus, particularly among longtime colleagues \u2014 some of whom argued that with the pardon wiping away his bribery indictment, the legal process had run its course and there was no reason to bar Cuellar from the post under caucus rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust look at the rules,\u201d said Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/198762\" data-person-id=\"198762\">Lois Frankel<\/a> (D-Fla.). \u201cThere\u2019s nothing more to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, the fact that the vote even happened meant that at least one Democratic appropriator privately objected to re-appointing Cuellar by acclamation. If his party retakes the House majority next year, Cuellar would be in line as subcommittee chair to directly oversee more than $60 billion in annual spending on agencies including Customs and Border Protection and ICE.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have made a high-profile push in recent weeks to police ethical transgressions in the party\u2019s ranks. Nearly two dozen Democrats led by Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/429181\" data-person-id=\"429181\">Marie Gluesenkamp Perez<\/a> of Washington broke ranks to reprimand Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/304652\" data-person-id=\"304652\">Chuy Garc\u00eda<\/a> (D-Ill.) for apparently engineering his retirement announcement to ensure a favored ally would succeed him.<\/p>\n<p>Illinois Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/307305\" data-person-id=\"307305\">Lauren Underwood<\/a> has served as the top Democrat on the subpanel since Cuellar\u2019s indictment last year alleging he took some $600,000 in bribes from foreign entities.
