Mark Green.<\/p>\n<p>But the single-digit margin of victory for Matt Van Epps was still a hard pill to swallow after national Republicans pulled out all the stops to rescue their candidate on the final days of the campaign, with the speaker himself traveling to the district to make a final pitch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was too close,\u201d said one House GOP leadership aide.<\/p>\n<p>The surprisingly-tight race between Van Epps and Democrat Aftyn Behn \u201cis a sign that 2026 is going to be a bitch of an election cycle,\u201d one House Republican told Blue Light News. \u201cRepublicans can survive if we play team and the Trump administration officials play smart. Neither is certain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Retiring Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) warned \u201cthe GOP should not ignore\u201d how close it came to losing a district President Donald Trump won by 22 points in 2024 \u2014 not to mention the Democratic gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey last month.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) agreed it was a \u201cdangerous\u201d sign for his party. \u201cIn a year, it\u2019s going to be a turnout election, and the left will show up,\u201d Cruz said in an interview with Fox Tuesday night. \u201cHate is a powerful motivator. They hate President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This close call in Tennessee adds to the ongoing headaches for Johnson back in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker is facing a revolt led by a member of his own leadership team, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), over news that the National Defense Authorization Act likely won\u2019t include her provision to require the FBI to notify Congress when it opens investigations into candidates running for federal office.<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik, who is running for governor, accused Johnson Tuesday of blocking the provision and \u201clying\u201d about it as she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/02\/elise-stefanik-mike-johnson-feud-00674030\" target=\"_blank\">builds support from other Republicans<\/a> to vote against the NDAA. But if Johnson adds the language back in, he risks losing Democratic support that could be crucial for getting the historically-bipartisan package over the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson could also be on the verge of being undermined by his own members who want a vote on legislation that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/12\/02\/congress\/anna-paulina-luna-congressional-stock-trading-ban-00673180\" target=\"_blank\">ban congressional stock trading<\/a>. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) officially moved Tuesday to lay the groundwork to circumvent leadership and force that vote, with Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) saying he and Luna were \u201ctired\u201d of waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Tuesday: Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/12\/02\/congress\/college-sports-bill-heads-to-final-vote-despite-gop-defections-00673376\" target=\"_blank\">faced a small rebellion<\/a> on the House floor over a procedural move involving legislation to regulate name, image and likeness compensation in college sports. That could spell trouble around a final vote coming Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s health care. Johnson is promising that House Republicans will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/02\/republicans-want-a-health-care-plan-they-dont-know-what-will-go-in-it-00673969\" target=\"_blank\">come up with a health policy proposal<\/a>. But there\u2019s no sign he\u2019ll be able to bring together moderates like Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), who wants to extend the enhanced Obamacare tax credits, and conservatives who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/03\/obamacare-subsidies-expire-this-month-many-republicans-are-shrugging-00672949\" target=\"_blank\">downplaying the effects<\/a> of letting the subsidies lapse.<\/p>\n<p>As retiring Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said Tuesday, midterm backlash for the GOP could be substantial if Republicans don\u2019t do something to prevent premiums going up come January.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 Venezuela fallout: <\/b>Significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/02\/boat-strike-republican-trump-loyalty-00673439\" target=\"_blank\"><u>cracks in GOP unity<\/u><\/a> are growing amid Trump\u2019s campaign to kill alleged drug traffickers off the coast of Venezuela. <\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 Hawley\u2019s health care pitch: <\/b>Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) is rolling out a bill to allow all taxpayers to deduct up to $25,000 in medical expenses. The bill also allows out of pocket expenses on health care premiums to be deducted.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 NDAA latest: <\/b>House and Senate leaders are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/12\/02\/congress\/china-investment-crackdown-in-flux-as-lawmakers-rush-to-finalize-defense-bill-00673705\" target=\"_blank\"><u>engaged in last-minute talks<\/u><\/a> over whether to include new restrictions on U.S. investments in China in the NDAA.
