{"id":15408,"date":"2025-11-08T17:01:40","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T17:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/stop-playing-politics-democrats-rip-court-extended-pause-to-snap-funding\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T17:01:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T17:01:40","slug":"stop-playing-politics-democrats-rip-court-extended-pause-to-snap-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/stop-playing-politics-democrats-rip-court-extended-pause-to-snap-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Stop playing politics\u2019: Democrats rip court-extended pause to SNAP funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Democrats are railing against the Trump administration after its temporary Supreme Court win paused an order that would\u2019ve required providing full funding of SNAP benefits amid the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/07\/ketanji-brown-jackson-supreme-court-snap-benefits-ruling-00643639\" target=\"_blank\">temporary victory<\/a> came late Friday night, as Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson granted the administration\u2019s request to pause a lower court order that would have required it access a separate nutrition account at the Department of Agriculture to provide full SNAP benefits for millions of Americans \u2014 leaving the fate of SNAP funding hanging in the balance for now as the government shutdown careens into its sixth week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trump administration is begging the Supreme Court to block an order requiring them to immediately release SNAP benefits,\u201d Minority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/196306\" data-person-id=\"196306\">Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJeffries\/status\/1986979053543252240\" target=\"_blank\">said on X on Friday<\/a>. \u201cMeanwhile. Millions of hungry Americans are at risk of starving. These extremists are sick people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minority Whip <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/191669\" data-person-id=\"191669\">Katherine Clark<\/a> (D-Mass.) also decried the pause, suggesting that Democrats would push back on the added delay to funding the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be very clear,\u201d Clark <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhipKClark\/status\/1986992581201276966\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on X<\/a>, \u201cTrump is making a choice not to feed hungry Americans. Democrats will be fighting back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Trump administration will go to any length \u2014 including appeal to the highest court in the land \u2014 if it means they can cut off food for hungry people,&#8221; Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenAdamSchiff\/status\/1986969419608633460\" target=\"_blank\">said on X on Friday<\/a>. &#8220;What is wrong with them?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The White House referred a request for comment to the Office of Management and Budget. OMB did not immediately respond.<\/p>\n<p>The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program \u2014 which serves more than 40 million Americans \u2014 ran out of funds Nov. 1 due to the government shutdown. The Trump administration has continued to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/28\/25-states-sue-trump-snap-food-aid-shutdown-00625431\" target=\"_blank\">lock horns with Democratic governors<\/a> and state leaders in a flurry of litigation seeking to resume funding SNAP.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Agriculture was slated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/06\/trump-usda-november-snap-benefits-shutdown-00639407\" target=\"_blank\">send out monthly allotments for November that are 65 percent of the typical maximum allotments<\/a>, according to a memo the USDA sent to state agencies Wednesday. As of Saturday, it is unclear whether those allotments have been carried out as prescribed in the memo.<\/p>\n<p>But Democratic state leaders have continued to urge the administration to tap into a separate Agriculture Department account, called Section 32, to renew funding to the program.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MassGovernor\/status\/1986899169647182086\" target=\"_blank\">announced Friday<\/a> that SNAP recipients in the Bay State could begin receiving their full benefits as early as Saturday. On Saturday morning, she said that the planned payments for families who went without earlier benefits were successfully sent out but that officials are reviewing what the latest pause means for recipients expecting benefits next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s cruelty knows no bounds,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MassGovernor\/status\/1987159580460085569\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Healey called on the president to \u201cstop playing politics with people\u2019s lives and pay full SNAP benefits for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York Gov. Kathy Hochul \u2014 who also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/1986906787568644392\" target=\"_blank\">said she directed state agencies<\/a> to fully fund SNAP benefits for November \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovKathyHochul\/status\/1986991870904344940?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">took to X<\/a> on Friday, saying the administration \u201cfought for\u201d the decision to delay the payments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t care if millions of Americans go hungry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has said it doesn\u2019t have the funds needed to restore full SNAP payments amid the ongoing shutdown. Officials argue that directing additional funds toward SNAP would pull money away from funding child nutrition programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur attorneys will not stop fighting, day and night, to defend and advance President Trump\u2019s agenda,\u201d Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AGPamBondi\/status\/1986985866900738242\" target=\"_blank\">said on X<\/a> after the temporary Supreme Court win.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/11\/04\/congress\/senate-stopgap-vote-00634799\" target=\"_blank\">Votes to reopen the government have failed<\/a> in the Senate 14 times, with the most recent failing 54-44, shy of the 60 votes needed to pass the House-approved continuing resolution to reopen the government.
