In the lead-up to Tuesday\u2019s gubernatorial election in New Jersey, some Democrats wondered if Mikie Sherrill<\/a> could pull off the improbable: winning three consecutive terms for the party for the first time since 1961.<\/p>\n

But Sherrill was confident she would emerge victorious<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sherrill said Wednesday in an interview with Blue Light News\u2019s Dasha Burns on \u201cThe Conversation\u201d podcast that she \u201cnever really felt too nervous about my ability to win this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

As early voting got underway, it became clear that it was \u201cjust a matter of how much we’d win by,\u201d Sherrill said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe narrative was weird in the primary, and it was weird in the general, and I think some of that was because of how people felt from \u201924, that there was still this kind of hangover from \u201924 and how that race went,\u201d she told Blue Light News.<\/p>\n

Still, the enthusiasm on the ground \u2014 especially at last month\u2019s nationwide \u201cNo Kings\u201d rallies<\/a> \u2014 convinced Sherrill that voters would deliver for her.<\/p>\n

Sherrill speculated that some observers underestimated her campaign<\/a> because it didn\u2019t follow the model of \u201cthe traditional Democratic campaign\u201d in New Jersey, where the legacy of machine politics looms large.<\/p>\n

“Because we built this a different way, I think it wasn’t as clear to people how we were doing it and how we were getting our votes out,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I think that probably made some people nervous, but I would say that we invested a lot of time, energy and resources in a statewide field program, the likes of which have never been seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherrill also said that her military background conveyed her “decisive\u201d leadership style to voters, who she said trust her to deliver on promises like bringing down energy costs.<\/p>\n

While she said she hasn\u2019t yet spoken to President Donald Trump, the governor-elect told Blue Light News that she\u2019s intent on \u201cclawing back as many resources into the state of New Jersey as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m really hoping we can convince the administration, \u2018hey, if you want to have a comeback in this economy, this is where you start and this is how you do it,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Despite striking a message comfortably to the right of New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani<\/a>, Sherrill said she and her Democratic peers who saw electoral success across the board Tuesday have one thing in common: \u201cThis desire to make change that things aren’t working for people.\u201d<\/p>\n
