They are once again saying, thanks, but no thanks.<\/p>\n<p>Trump spent several minutes during a breakfast meeting with GOP senators at the White House urging them to eliminate the 60-vote supermajority requirement for most bills and reopen the government on party lines \u2014 even as he acknowledged Republicans might not do it and said he would ultimately respect their \u201cwishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for Republicans to do what they have to do,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t terminate the filibuster you\u2019ll be in bad shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Senate GOP leaders quickly reiterated that it\u2019s simply not happening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve said before there are not the votes there,\u201d said Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> (R-S.D.), adding that Trump \u201ccould have some sway with members, but I just know where the math is on this issue in the Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Privately Republicans acknowledge they aren\u2019t anywhere close to having the votes to change the rules. Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51863\" data-person-id=\"51863\">John Barrasso<\/a> (R-Wyo.) pointed to the number of GOP senators who have recently backed the filibuster, adding that Trump is \u201cvery attuned to the political realities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several GOP senators also reiterated Wednesday they would not support a change. Opposition from just four of the 53 Senate Republicans could stop Trump\u2019s demand cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d never vote to nuke the filibuster,&#8221; Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/192907\" data-person-id=\"192907\">Thom Tillis<\/a> (R-N.C.) told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51173\" data-person-id=\"51173\">Mike Crapo<\/a> (R-Idaho) similarly said in an interview, \u201cI have long said I don\u2019t support nuking the filibuster.\u201d And Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/151793\" data-person-id=\"151793\">James Lankford<\/a> (R-Okla.), a member of Senate GOP leadership, called the filibuster an \u201cimportant aspect of how the Senate operates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The firm opposition hasn\u2019t stopped Trump from hammering Republicans, arguing Democrats will do it when they have control.
