{"id":15287,"date":"2025-11-05T13:16:45","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T13:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-dems-big-wins-could-prolong-the-shutdown\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T13:16:45","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T13:16:45","slug":"capitol-agenda-dems-big-wins-could-prolong-the-shutdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-dems-big-wins-could-prolong-the-shutdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitol agenda: Dems\u2019 big wins could prolong the shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>It\u2019s officially the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, and about a dozen Democrats are itching to find a way out.<\/p>\n<p>But after Democrats\u2019 sweeping victories Tuesday night, their colleagues are waking up this morning and wondering: Are we really going to cave <i>now<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>The big wins in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/04\/spanberger-wins-virginia-governors-race-00633606\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/04\/mikie-sherrill-new-jersey-governor-wins-00635466\" target=\"_blank\">New Jersey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/04\/democrats-win-pennsylvania-supreme-court-00633675\" target=\"_blank\">Pennsylvania<\/a> and elsewhere stand to complicate efforts to reopen the government. It&#8217;s hard to see most Democrats wanting to temper their momentum immediately after witnessing a massive voter backlash to President Donald Trump and Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight\u2019s results are a repudiation of the Trump agenda,\u201d Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement that called it \u201ca good night for Democrats and our fight to lower costs, improve healthcare, and reach a better future for American families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Democrats searching for an exit to the shutdown had their say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/04\/shutdown-set-to-break-record-as-senate-democrats-agonize-over-endgame-00636532\" target=\"_blank\">during a two-hour-plus caucus lunch Tuesday<\/a> that ended with grim faces and tight lips. Expect voices like Sen. Chris Murphy\u2019s to carry weight Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the take is that (a) people think Trump is out of control; and (b) people like Dems when we&#8217;re taking a stand and fighting for what we believe in \u2014 as we have been for the last month,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/1985896964358119526\" target=\"_blank\">Murphy (D-Conn.) posted on X<\/a> Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s Republicans\u2019 turn to have a long awkward meal. GOP senators are headed to the White House Wednesday morning for a breakfast meeting with Trump, who is unlikely to be in a jovial mood given the GOP\u2019s electoral drubbing.<\/p>\n<p>Senators can expect the president to rekindle his push to kill the filibuster as two senior Republicans granted anonymity to speak candidly say he is getting increasingly unhappy as the shutdown drags on.<\/p>\n<p>He hinted as much in a late-night <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115494873923565600\" target=\"_blank\">Truth Social post<\/a>: \u2018\u201cTRUMP WASN\u2019T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,\u2019 according to Pollsters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But GOP senators made clear Tuesday he won\u2019t have a very receptive audience if he makes a hard sell on going \u201cnuclear,\u201d with many favoring the 60-vote status quo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply going to make the Senate a mini version of the House is not what any of us really want to do,\u201d Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 Congress gets more info on strikes: <\/b>The White House is starting to provide Congress more information about U.S. maritime strikes as GOP senators threaten to side with Democrats to restrict Trump\u2019s war powers. Senate Armed Services ranking member Jack Reed (D-R.I.) said Tuesday that last week\u2019s bipartisan public admonishment of the administration for not providing the legal rationale for the strikes on alleged drug traffickers prompted DOD officials to provide lawmakers \u201csome new material to read.\u201d He doesn\u2019t think it covered most unanswered questions.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 Boozman, Booker meet with crypto czar: <\/b>Senate Agriculture Chair John Boozman (R-Ark.) and Sen.
