{"id":15208,"date":"2025-11-03T22:32:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T22:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/john-thune-says-he-is-optimistic-senate-will-move-to-end-shutdown-this-week\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T22:32:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T22:32:10","slug":"john-thune-says-he-is-optimistic-senate-will-move-to-end-shutdown-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/john-thune-says-he-is-optimistic-senate-will-move-to-end-shutdown-this-week\/","title":{"rendered":"John Thune says he is \u2018optimistic\u2019 Senate will move to end shutdown this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> said he was \u201coptimistic\u201d an agreement can be reached this week to end the five-week shutdown as bipartisan rank-and-file talks make progress.<\/p>\n<p>Thune, speaking to reporters, said the goal was to be able to send a revised stopgap bill to the House by the end of the week to reopen agencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously there were a lot of conversations over the weekend, and hopefully that will bring about the desired result,\u201d Thune said.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is expected to extend the Nov. 21 expiration date of the <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_HR_5371\" target=\"_blank\">House-passed funding punt<\/a> for at least several more weeks. Thune <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/10\/30\/congress\/john-thune-shutdown-deal-ultimatum-00629801\" target=\"_blank\">previously told POLITICO<\/a> that the deadline would need to be extended to at least January, but he hasn\u2019t yet endorsed a specific timeline. GOP leaders are discussing a new deadline that would fall between late January and March.<\/p>\n<p>Thune said on Monday that he is \u201copen\u201d to January but in listening mode as he faces competing demands within his conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe longer sort of runway there is better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The bipartisan group of rank-and-file senators has been discussing how to package a short-term funding patch that would reopen the government with a plan to move full-year funding bills and give Democrats a vote on soon-to-expire Affordable Care Act subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>Senators involved in the talks believe they are making progress, and while Thune said he was personally \u201coptimistic\u201d a shutdown off-ramp could be imminent, he said he wasn\u2019t yet \u201cconfident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are hoping that more Democrats will signal they are ready to end the shutdown after Tuesday\u2019s off-year elections, including closely watched governor races in New Jersey and Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats say it isn\u2019t the elections that are influencing their thinking but rather the pain that has been inflicted on Americans, including expected delays in federal food aid this month.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51180\" data-person-id=\"51180\">Dick Durbin<\/a> (D-Ill.) told reporters Monday he also sensed senators are getting closer to an exit strategy but said he wasn\u2019t yet sure what that would be.
