{"id":14742,"date":"2025-10-22T20:32:44","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T20:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/thune-meets-with-gop-senators-on-post-shutdown-path\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T20:32:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T20:32:44","slug":"thune-meets-with-gop-senators-on-post-shutdown-path","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/thune-meets-with-gop-senators-on-post-shutdown-path\/","title":{"rendered":"Thune meets with GOP senators on post-shutdown path"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> met with a group of GOP senators on Wednesday as Republicans quietly discuss possible paths forward on health care once the government reopens.<\/p>\n<p>The group met to talk about ideas including what to do about soon-to-expire Affordable Care Act subsidies \u2014 the centerpiece of Democrats\u2019 demands amid the three-week shutdown \u2014 according to three people granted anonymity to describe the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Whip <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51863\" data-person-id=\"51863\">John Barrasso<\/a> (R-Wyo.) and Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/66858\" data-person-id=\"66858\">Bill Cassidy<\/a> (R-La.), <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51310\" data-person-id=\"51310\">Shelley Moore Capito<\/a> (R-W.Va.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/175586\" data-person-id=\"175586\">Rick Scott<\/a> (R-Fla.) were among the senators who gathered in Thune\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Barrasso, asked if they talked about the ACA, said they talked about \u201ca lot of different things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just continue to meet and talk about the path forward,\u201d Barrasso said, while reiterating the GOP\u2019s firm stance that nothing will be negotiated until Democrats agree to reopen the government.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Republicans have been discussing internally what their party\u2019s position should be, including on the subsidies that will expire at the end of the year. The group in Thune\u2019s office represents an array of viewpoints across the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans, such as Scott, have pushed for letting them expire. Others, including Thune, have kept the door open to extending them so long as new curbs are implemented. Those could include income limits, fraud-prevention language and other potential changes to try to shore up GOP support.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are also discussing attaching other health care proposals to try to sweeten the pot for conservatives.
