{"id":14514,"date":"2025-10-16T15:47:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T15:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/house-gop-leaders-wont-exempt-flood-insurance-from-shutdown\/"},"modified":"2025-10-16T15:47:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-16T15:47:03","slug":"house-gop-leaders-wont-exempt-flood-insurance-from-shutdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/house-gop-leaders-wont-exempt-flood-insurance-from-shutdown\/","title":{"rendered":"House GOP leaders won\u2019t exempt flood insurance from shutdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Top House Republicans are holding firm against an effort by one of their home-state GOP senators to hold a stand-alone vote on reopening the National Flood Insurance Program amid the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>The program is especially important in hurricane-prone states such as Louisiana, and the shutdown means it cannot underwrite new policies \u2014 complicating life for thousands of would-be homebuyers across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/260075\" data-person-id=\"260075\">John Kennedy<\/a> (R-La.) wants Senate GOP leaders to hold a vote on a stand-alone bill that would reopen the NFIP. But Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/242539\" data-person-id=\"242539\">Mike Johnson<\/a> and Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/59655\" data-person-id=\"59655\">Steve Scalise<\/a> \u2014 both Louisianans \u2014 are not willing to put such a measure up for a House vote at this point, according to three people granted anonymity to describe private strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson has not weighed in on the stand-alone vote publicly as he\u2019s blamed Democrats for holding the program hostage. Scalise, meanwhile, noted in a brief interview Thursday that House Republicans moved to renew the NFIP when they passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_HR_5371\" target=\"_blank\">stopgap spending bill<\/a> last month.\u201cIf there&#8217;s another way to get the government open, I&#8217;m all for it,\u201d Scalise said. \u201cBut right now, it seems like the Democrats are hell-bent on keeping it shut down, which hurts other programs. I mean, it&#8217;s canceled closings on houses all across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s leadership circle similarly argues that the House-passed stopgap already addressed the flood insurance program, putting the onus on Senate Democrats to reinstate it.
