{"id":14423,"date":"2025-10-14T19:02:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T19:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/arizona-attorney-general-threatens-legal-action-against-mike-johnson-for-failing-to-seat-adelita-grijalva\/"},"modified":"2025-10-14T19:02:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T19:02:07","slug":"arizona-attorney-general-threatens-legal-action-against-mike-johnson-for-failing-to-seat-adelita-grijalva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/arizona-attorney-general-threatens-legal-action-against-mike-johnson-for-failing-to-seat-adelita-grijalva\/","title":{"rendered":"Arizona attorney general threatens legal action against Mike Johnson for failing to seat Adelita Grijalva"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes threatened legal action against House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday for failing to seat Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/cc1fad182b6d6f8b1e352e206\/files\/1fb1e59b-bcdd-d322-4132-fc159cb2f13a\/2025_10_14_Demand_Letter_to_Speaker_Johnson.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a letter<\/a> to Johnson, Mayes accused the House GOP leader of violating the Constitution by unnecessarily delaying the Democrat\u2019s swearing-in ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArizona\u2019s right to a full delegation, and the right of the residents of CD 7 to representation from the person they recently voted for, are not up for debate and may not be delayed or used as leverage in negotiations about unrelated legislation,\u201d Mayes, who is also a Democrat, wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Grivalja <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/09\/23\/adelita-grijalva-special-election-00576312\" target=\"_blank\">won a special election<\/a> in Arizona\u2019s deep-blue 7th Congressional District to replace her late father, former Rep. Ra\u00fal Grijalva, last month. Johnson has maintained Grijalva would be sworn in when the House is back in session \u2014 once Congress reaches an agreement to reopen the government \u2014 despite at one point telling reporters she would be sworn in \u201cas soon as she wants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, Mayes said that amounted to \u201ctrying to use Arizona\u2019s constitutional right to representation in the House as a bargaining chip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have accused Johnson and Republicans of stalling to prevent Grijalva from being the final signatory needed on an effort to force a vote on legislation related to releasing files about the investigation into sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<p>Mayes said her office was keeping \u201cevery option open to us, including litigation,\u201d to hold Johnson accountable and ensure Grijalva was sworn in promptly.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes threatened legal action against House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday for failing to seat Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva.
