{"id":14237,"date":"2025-10-09T18:02:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T18:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/schumer-remarks-under-gop-spotlight-as-senate-again-rejects-funding-bills\/"},"modified":"2025-10-09T18:02:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T18:02:46","slug":"schumer-remarks-under-gop-spotlight-as-senate-again-rejects-funding-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/schumer-remarks-under-gop-spotlight-as-senate-again-rejects-funding-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Schumer remarks under GOP spotlight as Senate again rejects funding bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Senate rejected dueling bills to fund the government for a seventh time Thursday, as the federal shutdown appears all but guaranteed to slide into a third week.<\/p>\n<p>Senators will vote again on the two <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_HR_5371\" target=\"_blank\">stopgap<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_HR_5450\" target=\"_blank\">measures<\/a> as soon as Friday. But with no votes flipping since last week, there\u2019s no sign that they are close to breaking the impasse.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Republicans believe they were handed a new political gift: Senate Minority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51231\" data-person-id=\"51231\">Chuck Schumer<\/a>\u2019s suggestion that the shutdown is getting better politically \u201cevery day\u201d for Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says every day gets better for us. \u2026 He\u2019s not talking about the American people,\u201d Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51863\" data-person-id=\"51863\">John Barrasso<\/a> (R-Wyo.) told reporters shortly before Thursday\u2019s votes.<\/p>\n<p>Barrasso and Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> both spoke on the floor Thursday morning with signs that featured Schumer&#8217;s remarks, which were made during an interview with Punchbowl News. Several other GOP senators and the White House weighed in on the comments Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter what Chuck Schumer thinks, Americans struggling is not good, and the Democrats must stop inflicting this pain on them and reopen the government now,\u201d White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer didn\u2019t directly address the remarks during a speech from the Senate floor on Thursday, instead sticking to Democrats\u2019 main message: that Republicans, as the party in power, could break the stalemate by coming to the negotiating table on government funding and health care.<\/p>\n<p>But he appeared to indirectly clarify them, adding that \u201ceach day our case to fix health care and end the shutdown gets better and better, stronger and stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump, Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/242539\" data-person-id=\"242539\">[Mike] Johnson<\/a> and Republicans in Congress are nowhere to be found,\u201d he said, adding that the three GOP leaders \u201cneed to sit down with Democrats and have a serious negotiation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Top Republicans, however, have repeatedly warned that they will not negotiate on the substance of soon-to-expire Affordable Care Act tax credits while the government is shut down.<\/p>\n<p>Barrasso, the No. 2 Senate Republican, told reporters on Thursday that GOP leaders would be willing to give Democrats a vote on some priorities, including on the Affordable Care Act, once the government reopens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there are discussions about that,\u201d Barrasso said. \u201cWe need to open the government and then we can have all the discussions and votes and talks and all of those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune, asked recently about the possibility of guaranteeing an ACA vote, didn\u2019t dismiss it, but said he didn\u2019t believe Democrats would take that as an off ramp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want a guaranteed result,\u201d Thune said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>There are bipartisan discussions going on about what would happen after the government reopens, including on the larger full-year funding bills and health care. But they have not yet borne fruit.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51168\" data-person-id=\"51168\">Susan Collins<\/a> (R-Maine) told reporters on Thursday she has been in \u201cclose contact\u201d with Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/66834\" data-person-id=\"66834\">Jeanne Shaheen<\/a> (D-N.H.), \u201cwho is very constructive and is trying to find a path forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, she said, \u201cwe need to open up the government today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Diana Nerozzi contributed to this report.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate rejected dueling bills to fund the government for a seventh time Thursday, as the federal shutdown appears all but guaranteed to slide into a third week.
