{"id":14216,"date":"2025-10-08T18:47:25","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T18:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/irs-furloughs-nearly-half-its-workforce-shuttering-most-operations\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T18:47:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T18:47:25","slug":"irs-furloughs-nearly-half-its-workforce-shuttering-most-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/irs-furloughs-nearly-half-its-workforce-shuttering-most-operations\/","title":{"rendered":"IRS furloughs nearly half its workforce, shuttering most operations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The IRS said it was furloughing nearly half of its workforce and shuttering most operations Wednesday, but will continue work to implement President Donald Trump&#8217;s signature tax cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Work on preparing for next year\u2019s tax-filing season will also continue, but numerous operations will be halted, including taxpayer services like call site operations.<\/p>\n<p>The agency will also suspend non-automated tax collections and \u201cmost headquarters and administrative functions not related to the safety of life and protection of property\u201d during non-filing season, <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/266\/Treasury_IRS_Lapse_Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">according to the agency\u2019s latest contingency plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The plan will idle tens of thousands of employees. While 39,870 \u2014 53.6 percent of the total workforce \u2014 will remain at work, 34,429 will be furloughed.<\/p>\n<p>The union that represents IRS workers condemned the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, due to the government shutdown the American people lost access to many vital services provided by the IRS,\u201d said Doreen Greenwald, the national president of the National Treasury Employees Union. \u201cExpect increased wait times, backlogs and delays implementing tax law changes as the shutdown continues. Taxpayers around the country will now have a much harder time getting the assistance they need, just as they get ready to file their extension returns due next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the government shut down last week, the agency exempted all of its employees from furlough for at least five business days, saying it would stay open by using special funding it was given by Congress in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>But Wednesday morning, the agency announced that, \u201cAn IRS-wide furlough began on October 8, 2025, for everyone except already-identified excepted and exempt employees,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/irs-employee-emergency-news\" target=\"_blank\">statement on the IRS\u2019s website<\/a>. \u201cEmployee[s] who are not exempt or excepted are furloughed and placed in a non-pay and non-duty status until further notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/foia\/ig\/cl\/10-8-2025-furlough-decision-letter-fy26.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">IRS\u2019s furlough decision letter<\/a> \u2014 which came a day after a White House memo suggested furloughed federal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/07\/white-house-furloughed-workers-00596231\" target=\"_blank\">employees might not receive backpay<\/a> \u2014 includes a reminder that \u201cemployees must be compensated on the earliest date possible after the lapse ends, regardless of scheduled pay dates,\u201d per a law Trump passed in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The agency originally dodged the furloughs in part because it bore responsibility for implementing the administration\u2019s marquee tax cuts, including no tax on tips, overtime and Social Security, which Republicans are counting on for a boost in next year&#8217;s midterm elections. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspect people will be getting notified all day,\u201d said Daniel Scharpenburg, a union leader at the IRS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The IRS said it was furloughing nearly half of its workforce and shuttering most operations Wednesday, but will continue work to implement President Donald Trump&#8217;s signature tax cuts.
