{"id":13763,"date":"2025-09-27T01:31:43","date_gmt":"2025-09-27T01:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/black-mayors-celebrate-drop-in-crime-even-if-they-arent-getting-any-credit\/"},"modified":"2025-09-27T01:31:43","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T01:31:43","slug":"black-mayors-celebrate-drop-in-crime-even-if-they-arent-getting-any-credit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/black-mayors-celebrate-drop-in-crime-even-if-they-arent-getting-any-credit\/","title":{"rendered":"Black mayors celebrate drop in crime, even if they aren\u2019t getting any credit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Some of the nation\u2019s most prominent Black mayors are celebrating major drops in crime in their cities \u2014 and grumbling that President Donald Trump doesn\u2019t seem to realize the accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly insisted that cities, particularly those run by Democrats, are overrun with violence, despite the fact that 2025 is <a href=\"https:\/\/jasher.substack.com\/p\/the-fbi-will-likely-report-the-lowest\" target=\"_blank\">on track to have the fewest homicides<\/a> ever recorded by the FBI. He deployed troops to Los Angeles and Washington and threatened to send them elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said that ignores the realities in cities like his, <a href=\"https:\/\/mayor.baltimorecity.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2025-05-01-mayor-scott-highlights-continued-historic-decline-homicides\" target=\"_blank\">which recorded just five homicides in April<\/a>, its lowest on record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we accomplish those things, then the goal post gets moved,\u201d Scott said Friday at a forum of mayors at the annual conference of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. \u201cPeople are like, \u2018well, what about stolen cars?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott\u2019s views were echoed by other mayors at the event, including Chicago\u2019s Brandon Johnson, Oakland\u2019s Barbara Lee and Washington\u2019s Muriel Bowser \u2014 all targets of the president\u2019s rhetoric about safety in American cities.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, whose city is experiencing a 30 percent drop in crime and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrace.org\/2025\/09\/trump-crime-lies-immigrants-democrats\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=bluesky&amp;utm_campaign=trace-branded&amp;utm_content=edit-promo\" target=\"_blank\">the fewest homicides it has seen in a decade<\/a>, says the focus is no accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to lift up the fact that the very places that are under attack are all spaces that are led by Black leaders,\u201d he said to a mostly Black audience. \u201cWe just got to name it. I know we know that, but I want to say it out loud that it\u2019s very intentional, because there is an extremism in this country that has not accepted the results of the Civil War and they\u2019re fully engaged in the rematch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowser said Trump deployed the National Guard to Washington under a \u201cfake emergency\u201d that was cover for immigration enforcement. The federal action, she said, has \u201cbeen very menacing and has disrupted \u2026 the trust that our communities have with our own police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal law enforcement presence in Washington was originally set to last for 30 days ending earlier this month, but <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DCGuard1802\/status\/1963596959266361486\" target=\"_blank\">has since been extended<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Van Johnson, the mayor of Savannah, Georgia, said many Black mayors applaud and have taken notes from Bowser\u2019s handling of the National Guard deployments and how to resist, but not forcefully agitate Trump in the process \u2014 all while juggling the expectations of their citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live at the intersection of white fear and Black expectation,\u201d said Johnson, head of the African American Mayors Association. \u201cIt\u2019s a very, very unique intersection for us \u2026 [because the] white fear is that we\u2019re doing too much, and Black expectation that we\u2019re not doing enough.
