White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday that the administration is \u201cadvocating\u201d to keep the government open amid a congressional funding fight, though she preemptively blamed Democrats for any potential shutdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the government is shut down, it will be the fault of the Democrats, and it will only hurt the most vulnerable in our country: Our seniors, veterans, military families, increasing security for members of congress, which is something this White House and the administration supports,” Leavitt said in a press briefing.<\/p>\n

Leavitt\u2019s words echo President Donald Trump\u2019s, who on Friday said Democrats \u201cwant to shut down the country<\/a>\u201d after Senate Democrats voted down Republicans\u2019 stopgap measure to keep the government funded through November. That same day, Senate Republicans voted to reject<\/a> a Democratic bill that would fund the government past the end of the month and avoid an Oct. 1 shutdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemocrats know that the right thing to do is join with Republicans to pass this clean funding extension,\u201d Leavitt said on Monday. \u201cThat is what the president wants.”<\/p>\n

Democrats have said they will oppose a GOP funding bill because Republicans didn\u2019t negotiate with Democratic minority leaders, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).<\/p>\n

On Monday, Leavitt said the Trump Administration wants a \u201csimple, clean budget extension.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the same budget that the Democrats approved six months ago, just adjusted for inflation,\u201d she added. \u201cUnfortunately, all of a sudden they want to shut down the government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schumer and Jeffries have called for a meeting with Trump<\/a>, though the president said he doesn\u2019t think a meeting will affect funding fight talks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d love to meet with them, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to have any impact,\u201d Trump told reporters Saturday night.<\/a> \u201cThey want all this stuff, they haven\u2019t changed, they haven\u2019t learned from the biggest beating they\u2019ve ever taken, just about.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
