{"id":13428,"date":"2025-09-18T22:59:05","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T22:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/senate-eyes-friday-votes-on-dueling-funding-bills\/"},"modified":"2025-09-18T22:59:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T22:59:05","slug":"senate-eyes-friday-votes-on-dueling-funding-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/senate-eyes-friday-votes-on-dueling-funding-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate eyes Friday votes on dueling funding bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Senators are expected to vote Friday on competing plans to temporarily fund the government past the end of the month as a partisan standoff ratchets up the chances for a shutdown, according to two people granted anonymity to describe private negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The plan, which still had to be finalized as of 6:45 p.m., comes after Republicans huddled behind closed doors for a second time Thursday to talk about the path forward as Congress barrels toward the Sept. 30 midnight deadline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democrats obviously want to vote on their [continuing resolution] \u2026 And we want to vote on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/09\/16\/house-gop-cr-shutdown-stopgap-00566425\" target=\"_blank\">House CR<\/a>,\u201d Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51170\" data-person-id=\"51170\">John Cornyn<\/a> (R-Texas) said, adding that Senate leaders are \u201ctalking to see if they can get there.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>It would be a shift from just hours ago when Majority Leader John Thune indicated that there wasn&#8217;t \u201cmuch sentiment\u201d inside the GOP for giving Democrats a vote on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/09\/17\/democrats-republicans-shutdown-trump-00570228?fbclid=IwY2xjawM5aL1leHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHt8eKzga0p-S1a4xlAO6ZzZ2GVFwRL5OQVLTIGkKxppkQtFDF97pjsx-cpeL_aem_66UH00nI6bhj0Yk2JdSeLw\" target=\"_blank\">alternative funding proposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Democrats are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/09\/18\/democrats-government-shutdown-strategy-00570559\" target=\"_blank\">playing procedural hardball<\/a> over the Senate\u2019s ability to leave town for a scheduled one-week break. Thune, Schumer and all other 98 senators would have to sign off on a deal to hold votes on the competing CR plans tomorrow. The two people said both votes would be held at a 60-vote threshold, meaning both would fail.<\/p>\n<p>Coming out of the Senate GOP meeting, Thune acknowledged that senators are \u201cworking on locking something in\u201d but declined to comment further.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer first floated the idea of holding side-by-side votes Friday.
