{"id":13296,"date":"2025-09-15T16:46:59","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T16:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/washington-post-columnist-says-she-was-fired-for-social-media-posts-after-kirk-was-killed\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T16:46:59","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T16:46:59","slug":"washington-post-columnist-says-she-was-fired-for-social-media-posts-after-kirk-was-killed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/washington-post-columnist-says-she-was-fired-for-social-media-posts-after-kirk-was-killed\/","title":{"rendered":"Washington Post columnist says she was fired for social media posts after Kirk was killed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah said on Monday that she was fired from the publication over social media posts she made following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/09\/10\/charlie-kirk-tpusa-shot-00555826\" target=\"_blank\">the killing of Charlie Kirk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/karenattiah.substack.com\/p\/the-washington-post-fired-me-but?triedRedirect=true\" target=\"_blank\">a lengthy Substack post<\/a>, Attiah said she was dismissed over her posts on Bluesky that she says were deemed to be &#8220;unacceptable,\u201d \u201cgross misconduct\u201d and that endangered the physical safety of her colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey rushed to fire me without even a conversation,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThis was not only a hasty overreach, but a violation of the very standards of journalistic fairness and rigor the Post claims to uphold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the publication shifted its opinion section to focus on supporting \u201cpersonal liberties and free markets.\u201d Owner Jeff Bezos said at the time that a \u201cbroad-based opinion section\u201d was no longer needed because a diversity of opinions were available online.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Attiah\u2019s social media posts condemned political violence but also highlighted Kirk\u2019s divisive comments on Black women. In her only post directly mentioning Kirk, she quoted the Turning Point USA founder\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/11\/charlie-kirk-quotes-beliefs\" target=\"_blank\">comments that Black women lack \u201cbrain processing power.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/karenattiah.bsky.social\/post\/3lyjhcx26ik2m\" target=\"_blank\">made clear<\/a> that not performing over-the-top grief for white men who espouse violence was not the same as endorsing violence against them,\u201d Attiah said.<\/p>\n<p>Attiah, who started her career at The Washington Post in 2014, said the publication \u201csilenced&#8221; her. She warned her firing is part of a larger trend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to me is part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2025\/02\/06\/dei-gop-segregation\/\" target=\"_blank\">broader purge of Black voices from academia, business, go<u>vernment, and media<\/u><\/a> \u2014 a historical pattern as dangerous as it is shameful \u2014 and tragic,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah said on Monday that she was fired from the publication over social media posts she made following the killing of Charlie Kirk.
