President Joe Biden praised Vice President Kamala Harris for running \u201can inspiring campaign\u201d and called on the country to unite behind a fair election during his first public remarks since President-elect Donald Trump\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe will of the people always prevails,\u201d Biden told a group of his staffers, Cabinet members and some family members in the Rose Garden Thursday. He added, \u201cI’ve said many times: You can’t love your country only when you win. You can’t love your neighbor only when you agree.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden, who spoke to Trump<\/a> Wednesday to congratulate him on his victory and invite him to a White House meeting, commended Harris as having \u201ca backbone like a ramrod\u201d amid her decisive loss.<\/p>\n

The president is already facing heat from fellow Democrats<\/a> who blame him for not stepping aside from his reelection campaign soon enough, squandering Harris\u2019 chances at winning.<\/p>\n

But Biden praised his legacy as leaving behind \u201cthe strongest economy in the world\u201d and called on members of his administration to \u201cmake every day count\u201d before passing the torch in a peaceful transfer of power.<\/p>\n

He also repeated his call for Americans to \u201cbring down the temperature\u201d amid deep political divisions.<\/p>\n
