The former president has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/trump-pushes-new-word-jan-6-rioters-hostages-rcna124026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defended them<\/a> as \u201cvictims\u201d and \u201chostages.\u201d He has promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/trumps-new-commitment-pardons-jan-6-rioters-matters-rcna164670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reward them with pardons<\/a> \u2014 including those who violently clashed with law enforcement. He has helped rioters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/unrepentant-trump-participates-fundraiser-jan-6-defendants-rcna101828\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raise money<\/a>, and at one point he even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/trumps-weird-song-jan-6-rioters-sort-matters-rcna73345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released a song<\/a> with Jan. 6 inmates.<\/p>\n<p class>But as it turns out, there was still room for him to fall further.<\/p>\n<p class>During a Univision town hall event, a man named Ramiro Gonzalez told Trump that he had lost his support, in part because of his handling of Jan. 6. \u201cI want to give you the opportunity to try to win back my vote,\u201d the Floridian \u2014 who described himself as a Republican \u2014 told the former president.<\/p>\n<p class>After pretending he wasn\u2019t responsible for summoning the Jan. 6 crowd to the nation\u2019s capital, Trump said: \u201cNothing done wrong. At all, nothing done wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>He went on say, in reference to the insurrectionist violence, \u201cThere were no guns down there; we didn\u2019t have guns. The others had guns, but we didn\u2019t have guns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>Just so we\u2019re all clear, when Trump referenced \u201cwe,\u201d he was aligning himself with the violent criminals \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/trump-vance-still-cant-talk-jan-6-honest-way-rcna175682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some of whom carried guns<\/a>, his latest lies notwithstanding. Similarly, \u201cthe others\u201d was in reference to law enforcement personnel.<\/p>\n<p class>The Washington Post published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/10\/17\/trump-jan-6-insurrection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an analysis<\/a> that noted, \u201cIt\u2019s actually not the first time Trump has seemed to do this. But the last time, Trump\u2019s comments weren\u2019t so clear, and he apparently caught himself. At last month\u2019s presidential debate, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/09\/10\/trump-calls-jan-6-rioters-we-presidential-debate\/75167915007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cited \u2018we\u2019 before shifting to \u2018this group of people.<\/a>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>Circling back to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/completed-evolution-trump-sees-jan-6-rioters-patriots-n1288524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier coverage<\/a>, the day after the assault on the Capitol, the then-president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/07\/22\/what-donald-trump-has-said-about-capitol-rioters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cLike all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness and mayhem.\u201d He went on to describe the riot as a \u201cheinous attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>Reading from a prepared text, Trump added: \u201cThe demonstrators who infiltrated the Capitol have defiled the seat of American democracy. &#8230; To those who engage in the acts of violence and destruction: You do not represent our country, and to those who broke the law: You will pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>Five days later, the Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/07\/22\/what-donald-trump-has-said-about-capitol-rioters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemned<\/a> the \u201cmob [that] stormed the Capitol and trashed the halls of government.\u201d On the final full day of his term, again reading from a script, Trump added: \u201cAll Americans were horrified by the assault on our Capitol. Political violence is an attack on everything we cherish as Americans.
